Striped Bass/Bluefish Length – Weight – Age

I need to start of with “A scale is the most accurate way to know the weight of your catch” and all the charts and calculators will not replace a scale. The following charts are provided as a reference only and the weight of your catch will vary based on season.

A Word on Measurements!

The most common way to measure a fish is from tip of mouth to the fork of the tail fin using your tape measure. The second and more universally accepted measurement method is from the closed mouth to pinched tail fin, not the for the fork of the tail for the total length of your catch.

Tip: Avoid one of the biggest errors when measuring your catch, do not use a tape measure pulled over the body of the fish. Measuring a fish in this manor will increase the overall length since the tape has to bend over the rounded body mass of the fish. The correct method is to place the tape measure on the ground or a hard surface and then place the fish on top of it.

Best advice is to check the regulations in the state where you are fishing and verify that the regulations apply to your targeted fish, avoid any questioning by others and especially Fish and Game Officers!

IGFA

IGFA Fish Weight Formula:

((Girth x Girth) x Length) / 800 = weight in pounds

Take the measurements as follows:
Girth at the thickest point, Fork Length from the point of the lower jaw to crotch of the tail.

Example: If the fish’s girth is 15 inches and its length is 29 inches, the formula would be used as follows:15 x 15 x 29, divided by 800 = 8.16 pounds

Then the “.16” or “16/100” is converted to ounces (multiply by 16) .16 x 16 = 2.56 or 3 ounces so this fish is 8 pounds 3 ounces
